    PPA Continuing Education Event

    August 20, 2016
    9 AM till 4:30 PM
Registration includes Lab Fee of $80

Spend the day in the studio and workshop with Ray, and a whole pile of raw materials if you dare!

We will explore the tools and techniques to create high quality photography gear and complete three valuable projects.  This will be a hands on class and folks should where cloths that are suitable for working in the shop.  Jeans, tee shirts and comfortable shoes.

Each student will built an “Eye Lighter”, a stand up panel reflector and a diffusion panel to take home with them.  If time allows we will practice using these new tool to make some photographs.

A lab fee of $80.00 will cover all the materials required for these projects.

    9am – 4:30 pm

Coffee and introductions.   Round table exploring all the things that enterprising folk can build with simple hand tools and easy to obtain supplies.

We will cover basic shop safety, tool and materials.

Shop safety, everyone will need to bring a pair of safety glasses and we will cover basic tool safety.

We will work thru design, form and function with an eye to building simple, portable professional equipment.   Just because you made it at home does not mean that it will not work as well as the same type of item purchased in a store.

We will break for lunch and spent the slack time discussing other items that can be built by the enterprising photographer.

The afternoon will be filled with the actual construction and finishing of the projects started in the morning.  We will finish the day with wrap up discussion of how these concepts can be used for other projects.

HDR photo shoot at the Shoreline Trolley Museum

    PPA Continuing Education Event

    August 22, 2016
    9:30 AM till 4:00 PM
    $10 per person admission

Come and learn about extended and high dynamic range.

Learn how to set up your camera to take high dynamic range images.

Have fun with Rust, Trains, Buses, HDR (high dynamic range), and models (for part of the day).

Lisa will show you how to take photographs for High Dynamic Range (HDR). HDR allows the photographer to capture the details in the highlights and in the shadows. Even with the perfect exposure, there are certain scenes that will always tend to get blown-out highlights, flat shadows, or both. The solution is HDR, not the early grungy oversaturated HDR results that early efforts yielded, but stunningly accurate image with pop. Dynamic range is just the difference between the lightest light and darkest dark that one can capture in a photo. Once your subject exceeds the camera’s dynamic range, the highlights tend to wash out or even appear solid white and/or the darks become big black blobs.

A HDR photo results from taking two (or three, or five or nine or fourteen) photos at different exposures (varying only the shutter speed) and then tone map them together with software to create a better more accurate picture. Lisa will show you how to use manual mode to capture different exposures by keeping the ISO and aperture the same and changing the shutter speed, or based on your camera and working knowledge of the camera, use Autoexposure bracketing (AEB) to automatically capture these varying exposures. Canon cameras even come with custom creative modes (those C1, or even C2 and C3 on your dial) which can automate and simply the capture process. Some cameras can only take 3 exposures using AEB, while others can take 5 or 7, but using exposure compensation we can use our knowledge of the camera to take 9 exposures using a 3 AEB camera or 14 exposures using a 7 AEB camera.

We will also explore the complexity of having a moving subject or a person in out HDR with some models in the afternoon. post-processing with people or moving subjects requires the use of deghosting and or layer masks.

A pdf with instructions and tips will be provided to all participants

    Real Estate Photography Workshop

    with Rick Hydren-2

    PPA Continuing Education Event

    October 1, 2016
    9 AM till 4:30 PM

This day long workshop on Real Estate Photography will cover business overview, marketing, pricing strategies, image making, processing technics and presentation options.  We will spend about 2 hours of the class in a home where we will photograph several rooms and capture exteriors using a 16 foot telescoping camera stand. We will also create a floor plan using a laser measuring device that inputs room sizes directly into an iPad app created for generating plans suitable for real estate agents. We will review shooting remotely with a CamRanger attached to the camera and controlling most of its functions from an iPad or iPhone.
